IEC Program Categories

The IEC program offers three distinct categories, each tailored to different aspirations:

Working Holiday

This popular category is ideal for individuals who wish to travel and work in Canada without a pre-arranged job offer. Participants receive an open work permit, valid for one to two years, allowing them the flexibility to work for multiple employers in various locations across Canada. It's perfect for those who want to earn money while exploring the country.

Young Professionals

Designed for participants seeking to advance their careers, the Young Professionals category requires a valid job offer in Canada that contributes to their professional development. Approved applicants receive an employer-specific work permit. The job offer must be for a paid position classified under National Occupation Code (NOC) Skill Type Level 0, A, or B.

International Co-op (Internship)

This category is for students enrolled in a post-secondary institution in their home country who need to complete a work placement or internship in Canada as part of their studies. Applicants must have a pre-arranged job offer for an internship with a Canadian company. Upon approval, they receive an employer-specific work permit for the duration of their placement.

Eligibility for IEC

To be eligible for the International Experience Canada program, candidates generally must:

• Be a citizen (passport holder) of one of the countries with a bilateral Youth Mobility Arrangement with Canada.
• Possess a valid passport for the entire duration of their intended stay in Canada.
• Be between the ages of 18 and 30 or 35 at the time of application, depending on their country of citizenship.
• Have the equivalent of CAD $2,500 upon arrival in Canada to cover initial expenses.
• Be able to obtain health insurance for the duration of their stay.
• Be admissible to Canada.
• Have a round-trip ticket or sufficient funds to purchase a departure ticket.
• Not be accompanied by dependents.
• Pay the required fees.

The IEC Application Process

The IEC program operates on an Expression of Interest (EOI) and Invitation to Apply (ITA) model. Here's a simplified overview of the steps involved:

1. Complete the "Come to Canada" Questionnaire: Determine your eligibility and receive a personal reference code.
2. Create an IRCC Online Account: Use your reference code to set up your account.
3. Submit Your IEC Profile: Complete the profile builder and select the IEC pools you wish to be considered for (e.g., Working Holiday, Young Professionals).
4. Receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA): If selected, you will receive an ITA in your IRCC account. You have 10 days to accept or decline it.
5. Submit Work Permit Application: If you accept the ITA, you have 20 days to complete, pay for, and submit your work permit application. For Young Professionals and International Co-op, your employer must pay the Employer Compliance Fee and provide you with an Offer of Employment number.
6. Upload Supporting Documents: Provide all required documents, including police certificates and medical exam results if applicable.
7. Pay Fees: Pay the participation fee and, if applicable, the open work permit holder fee.
8. Application Assessment: IRCC will review your application, which typically takes about eight weeks for complete submissions.
9. Receive Letter of Introduction (LOI): If approved, you will receive a Port of Entry (POE) Introduction Letter in your account, which you present upon arrival in Canada to obtain your work permit.
